This piece is especially personal to Nicole Herring. This self-portrait has become a piece of personal reflection and past experiences. The process of making and developing the meaning behind “Dear Younger Me” was a very raw and emotional journey, remembering past struggles, hurts, and traumas.

The particular expression and stance of the lady are such that it seems she is looking back over her life, asking herself the question, “What advice would I give myself ten years ago?" “What advice would I tell my younger self?”

The personal, emotional message of hope is the word “endure” which is written backward and in a bold red color. It is a one-word message from the lady to her younger self. The backward orientation is intended to illustrate a younger self looking in the mirror and seeing her reflection (in the mirror, “endure” would be spelled correctly).

Nicole has a past scarred by naivety and sexual trauma, yet this piece has given her the strength to remember that what once seemed unbearable, with time, shall pass.
